Attack Squadron 65 (VA-65), the "Tigers," was a distinguished U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated the Grumman A-6 Intruder. The Tigers brought the predatory instincts of their namesake to the all-weather attack mission, stalking targets through the darkest nights, the worst weather, and the heaviest defenses with the A-6's unmatched combination of navigation systems, weapons delivery computers, and heavy ordnance capacity.
The A-6 Intruder that VA-65 operated was the Navy's premier all-weather medium attack aircraft, capable of carrying up to 18,000 pounds of ordnance and delivering it with precision in conditions that grounded every other tactical aircraft in the carrier air wing. The Tigers' pilots and bombardier/navigators formed two-person teams that spent hundreds of hours developing the close working relationship required to operate the complex A-6 in the most demanding combat environments. The result was an attack capability that fleet commanders relied on when the target absolutely had to be destroyed regardless of conditions.
VA-65 deployed aboard Atlantic Fleet aircraft carriers and saw extensive operational service, maintaining the all-weather attack capability that was essential to the carrier air wing's combat power. The Tigers' legacy is part of the proud tradition of the A-6 Intruder community.
