Attack Squadron 46 (VA-46), the "Clansmen," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated both the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the Vought A-7 Corsair II during its distinguished service life. The Clansmen's name drew from the Scottish Highland tradition of fierce warrior clans bound by loyalty and honor — values that defined the squadron's culture and fighting spirit throughout its history.
VA-46 served with the Atlantic Fleet, deploying aboard aircraft carriers to the Mediterranean Sea, Atlantic Ocean, and beyond. The Clansmen saw combat during multiple deployments and were among the squadrons that participated in some of the most significant naval operations of the Cold War and post-Cold War eras. The squadron's transition from the A-4 Skyhawk to the A-7 Corsair II brought improved weapons delivery accuracy, increased range, and greater payload capacity, but the Clansmen's aggressive attack mentality remained constant regardless of the platform.
