Attack Squadron 34 (VA-34), the "Blue Blasters," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk during the Cold War era. The Blue Blasters were part of the Navy's robust light attack community that provided the fleet with the ability to project conventional strike power from aircraft carriers around the world. VA-34's pilots trained to deliver ordnance on targets ranging from enemy ships and shore installations to bridges, airfields, and armored formations.
The A-4 Skyhawk that VA-34 operated was designed by the legendary Ed Heinemann at Douglas Aircraft, who famously delivered an attack jet that came in under the Navy's maximum weight specification by half. The result was one of the most successful combat aircraft in history — light, fast, reliable, and capable of operating from the smallest carrier decks.
