The Barn Owls carried one of the most distinctive mascots in naval aviation — the barn owl, a nocturnal predator known for its silent flight and deadly precision in darkness, qualities that perfectly matched the all-weather attack mission.
VA-215's Barn Owls were trained to deliver ordnance on target in conditions that would ground most aircraft — at night, in bad weather, and against heavily defended positions. The barn owl mascot symbolized the squadron's ability to strike silently and lethally from the darkness, catching the enemy unaware. Attack squadrons like VA-215 formed the offensive backbone of carrier air wings during the Cold War, providing the precision strike capability that could project American power against any adversary.
