VA-212 Rampant Raiders — the first fleet squadron to fire the AGM-62 Walleye in combat, pioneering precision-guided weapons over North Vietnam in 1967.
VA-212, the "Rampant Raiders," was established as VF-212 on June 20, 1955, and redesignated VA-212 on April 1, 1956. Flying A-4 Skyhawks from carriers USS Hancock and USS Bon Homme Richard, the Rampant Raiders conducted extensive combat operations in Vietnam. In February 1965, the squadron participated in Operation Flaming Dart II and the Rolling Thunder campaign. In 1966, VA-212 became the first fleet unit equipped with the AGM-62 Walleye guided weapon, and on March 11, 1967, CO Commander H.L. Smith conducted the first combat Walleye attack against the Sam Son Army Barracks. Smith was later awarded the Navy Cross for strikes on the Bac Giang Thermal Power Plant before being killed in action on May 20, 1967. The squadron supported Marines at Khe Sanh and flew Linebacker operations before disestablishment in 1975.
