VA-196 operated throughout the Cold War and Vietnam era, flying attack missions from carrier decks in the Western Pacific and beyond. The "Main Battery" identity placed the squadron at the center of the air wing's offensive power, responsible for delivering the most devastating ordnance loads against the most important targets. Attack squadrons like VA-196 were the reason aircraft carriers existed — to project power by putting bombs on target, anytime, anywhere in the world.
