Attack Squadron 165 (VA-165), the "Boomers," was a distinguished U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron that operated the Grumman A-6 Intruder. The Boomers' name perfectly described their mission: delivering heavy ordnance on target with the thunderous impact that only the A-6's massive weapons payload could produce. With the ability to carry up to 18,000 pounds of ordnance, the Intruder was the Navy's heavy hitter, and VA-165 used every pound of that capability.
VA-165 saw combat during the Vietnam War, where the Boomers' A-6 Intruder crews flew some of the most dangerous and important missions of the air campaign. The A-6's all-weather capability meant that VA-165 could strike when other squadrons were grounded by monsoon rains and low ceilings — the Boomers flew through the worst conditions to hit targets that were considered untouchable by fair-weather aircraft. The squadron's bombardier/navigators used the A-6's advanced radar and navigation systems to guide their pilots through pitch-black skies and torrential rain to deliver ordnance with remarkable precision.
The Boomers continued to serve through the Cold War era, deploying aboard Pacific Fleet carriers as the A-6 community's contribution to the carrier air wing's strike capability. VA-165's legacy embodies the spirit of the A-6 Intruder community — tough, capable, and utterly indifferent to the weather.
