Attack Squadron 127 (VA-127) "Batmen" was a United States Navy adversary squadron based at NAS Lemoore, California, that operated the A-4 Skyhawk to provide dissimilar air combat training (DACT) to Pacific Fleet fighter and attack squadrons. The Batmen were among the Navy's dedicated aggressor units that replicated enemy fighter tactics, ensuring fleet aircrews were prepared for the realities of air-to-air combat.
VA-127's Batmen pilots were expert aerial combatants who studied foreign fighter tactics and flew the agile A-4 Skyhawk to simulate threat aircraft in training engagements against fleet squadrons. The adversary mission was born from the hard lessons of Vietnam, where Navy pilots encountered surprisingly effective enemy fighter opposition and initially suffered poor kill ratios. The creation of adversary squadrons like VA-127, alongside the famous TOPGUN program, revolutionized Navy air combat training and dramatically improved fighter pilot survival rates. The Batmen's A-4 Skyhawks — small, fast, and incredibly maneuverable — were perfect for simulating enemy MiGs.
