Attack Squadron 122 (VA-122), the "Flying Eagles," served as the Fleet Replacement Squadron (FRS) for the A-7 Corsair II on the West Coast, responsible for training every Pacific Fleet pilot who would fly the Corsair in operational squadrons. VA-122 was the gateway to the attack community for West Coast naval aviators — the Flying Eagles' instructors turned newly winged pilots into combat-ready attack aviators capable of delivering ordnance on target from carrier decks across the Pacific.
The A-7 Corsair II training syllabus at VA-122 was comprehensive and demanding, covering air-to-ground weapons delivery, navigation, carrier qualification, formation flying, tactical maneuvering, and all-weather operations. The Flying Eagles' instructor pilots were among the most experienced attack aviators in the Navy, drawn from fleet squadrons after multiple deployments. Their mission was to instill the skills, judgment, and warrior ethos that would keep their students alive in combat and effective on the target.
VA-122's role as the FRS made it one of the most important squadrons in Navy attack aviation — the quality of every Pacific Fleet A-7 squadron was directly traceable to the training provided by the Flying Eagles.
