The Eagles of VA-115 — one of the Navy's legendary light attack squadrons, carrying the A-4 Skyhawk and later the A-6 Intruder into combat from the flight decks of America's carriers.
Attack Squadron 115 (VA-115), the "Eagles," was a U.S. Navy carrier-based attack squadron with a distinguished combat record spanning the Vietnam War and Cold War eras. VA-115 operated the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk — the nimble, reliable, and devastatingly effective light attack jet that became the workhorse of Navy and Marine Corps close air support and interdiction missions throughout Southeast Asia.
The A-4 Skyhawk was a pilot's airplane — small, fast, and responsive, with the ability to carry a bomb load nearly equal to its own empty weight. VA-115's pilots flew the Skyhawk from the flight decks of aircraft carriers on combat missions over North and South Vietnam, striking targets ranging from bridges and supply depots to enemy troop concentrations and air defenses. The missions were extraordinarily dangerous — A-4 pilots flew at low altitude into some of the most heavily defended airspace in the world, facing a gauntlet of anti-aircraft artillery, surface-to-air missiles, and MiG interceptors.
VA-115 later transitioned to the Grumman A-6 Intruder, the Navy's premier all-weather medium attack aircraft, before eventually being redesignated as VFA-115 "Eagles" and transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The Eagles' legacy spans the full arc of Navy attack aviation, from the Skyhawk era through the Intruder and into the modern strike fighter age. This patch honors the VA-115 era and the aviators who flew and fought under the Eagles banner.
