Patrol Squadron 22 (VP-22) "Blue Geese" was a United States Navy maritime patrol squadron that operated the P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. The Blue Geese callsign evoked the image of a disciplined formation of geese flying long distances over water — perfectly fitting for a patrol squadron that spent countless hours covering vast stretches of ocean on anti-submarine warfare and maritime surveillance missions.
VP-22's Blue Geese flew the P-3 Orion on extended maritime patrols that could last ten hours or more, searching for submarines, monitoring surface shipping, and providing intelligence to fleet commanders. The P-3 Orion was the backbone of the Navy's maritime patrol force during the Cold War, and VP-22's crews became experts at using sonobuoys, magnetic anomaly detection, and radar to find and track enemy submarines hiding in the ocean depths. Like their namesake geese, VP-22's crews operated in disciplined formation — coordinating multi-aircraft patrols across hundreds of thousands of square miles of ocean, maintaining communication and tactical coordination over vast distances.
