Dastardly Barbarians — HSM-48 DET 5, the helicopter detachment aboard USS Winston Churchill that earned a nickname as fierce as their mission.
Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 48 (HSM-48), the "Vipers," deploys detachments of MH-60R Seahawk helicopters aboard surface combatants throughout the fleet. Detachment 5 (DET 5), known as the "Dastardly Barbarians," operated from USS Winston Churchill (DDG-81), providing the destroyer with organic anti-submarine warfare (ASW), anti-surface warfare (ASUW), search and rescue, and surveillance capability.
The MH-60R Seahawk is the Navy's premier multi-mission helicopter for surface combatants, equipped with dipping sonar, sonobuoys, radar, FLIR, and weapons including the Mk 54 torpedo and Hellfire missiles. Each HSM detachment operates semi-independently aboard its host ship, with pilots, aircrewmen, and maintainers working as a tight-knit team far from the parent squadron. The "Dastardly Barbarians" nickname captures the aggressive spirit of DET 5's crew.
