Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 85 (HS-85), the Golden Gaters, was a U.S. Navy Reserve helicopter squadron operating the H-3 Sea King. This embroidered patch preserves the Golden Gaters' iconic San Francisco-inspired insignia. Named for the Golden Gate Bridge, HS-85 represented the Navy Reserve's helicopter ASW capability in the Bay Area. The Golden Gaters' citizen-sailor aircrew balanced civilian careers with the demanding requirements of naval helicopter aviation, maintaining proficiency in anti-submarine warfare, search and rescue, and utility operations through drill weekends and annual training periods.
