The Commander Pacific Fleet Attack Wing (COMPACFLTATKWING) patch represents the shore-based command authority that oversaw all A-6 Intruder attack squadrons assigned to the Pacific Fleet. This command was responsible for the training, readiness, and administration of the Intruder community on the West Coast, ensuring that Pacific Fleet attack squadrons were prepared for combat deployment.
The A-6 Intruder was the Navy's premier all-weather, deep-strike attack aircraft, capable of delivering ordnance on target in conditions that grounded every other aircraft in the inventory. Commander Pacific Fleet Attack Wing managed the readiness of multiple VA (attack) squadrons, overseeing their training cycles, deployment preparations, and post-cruise stand-downs. The command ensured that every Intruder crew that deployed aboard a carrier was qualified in all-weather attack, aerial refueling, and the complex mission planning required for deep-strike operations behind enemy lines. With the retirement of the A-6 Intruder in the 1990s, this command structure was dissolved, making this patch a piece of naval aviation history.
