The US Army Armor Branch patch represents the armored warfare community of the United States Army — the tankers, cavalry scouts, and armored crewmen who operate the M1 Abrams main battle tank and Bradley Fighting Vehicle. The Armor Branch traces its lineage to the earliest days of American armored warfare and continues to serve as the Army's primary shock force on the modern battlefield.
The Armor Branch is the direct descendant of the horse cavalry, having transitioned from mounted warfare to mechanized combat during World War II. Today's armor soldiers operate the M1A2 Abrams, a 70-ton main battle tank armed with a 120mm smoothbore cannon that can destroy any armored vehicle on Earth. Armor crewmen and cavalry scouts undergo demanding training at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning), Georgia, learning the tactics of armored warfare, gunnery, and combined arms operations that have defined the Army's fighting edge since Patton's tanks swept across Europe. The Armor Branch motto, "Armor Leads the Way," captures the tankers' aggressive spirit.
