HMLA-167, the Warriors, was commissioned on March 1, 1968, at Marble Mountain Air Facility in Da Nang, Republic of Vietnam, and has carried its attack helicopter mission through every major conflict since. The squadron flies AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters and UH-1Y Venom utility helicopters under Marine Aircraft Group 29, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, at Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina. Its motto, Have Guns-Will Travel, says everything about the Warriors identity, and none of those guns go anywhere without the ordnancemen who load, arm, inspect, and certify every round, rocket, and missile before the aircraft ever lifts. Aviation ordnancemen, known throughout the fleet as Ordies, are responsible for the maintenance, stowing, issuing, and loading of all airborne weapons and munitions at the squadron level. In a light attack squadron like HMLA-167, that work is constant, precise, and directly tied to whether the Cobras and Venoms can execute close air support when ground forces need it most.
