Officially Licensed USMC VMU-1 Watchdogs Throwback Patch — The Original Unmanned Aviation Marines
Before drones were everywhere, the Watchdogs were already flying them in combat. This throwback patch honors where it all began.
Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron 1 (VMU-1) — the 'Watchdogs' — has been at the forefront of Marine Corps unmanned aviation since the concept was still in its infancy. This throwback patch honors the squadron's earlier era, when unmanned aerial vehicles were a new and unproven technology in the Marine Corps and VMU-1 was pioneering the tactics, techniques, and procedures that would make UAS an indispensable part of Marine Corps operations. The Watchdogs flew the RQ-2 Pioneer, one of the first operational tactical unmanned aircraft, before transitioning to more advanced systems. They deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, providing the persistent ISR coverage that allowed Marine commanders to see the battlefield and make decisions in real time. The throwback design connects today's VMU-1 Marines to the pioneers who proved the value of unmanned aviation in combat, establishing the foundation for the UAS-intensive Marine Corps of the future. This patch is for the Marines who were there when it all started.
Perfect For: VMU-1 Watchdogs Marines past and present, Pioneer UAV operators, UAS community veterans, and anyone who served in the early days of Marine Corps unmanned aviation.
