USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62) is an Arleigh Burke-class (Flight I) Aegis guided missile destroyer of the United States Navy, named in honor of Lieutenant William Charles Fitzgerald — a US Navy SEAL killed in action during the Vietnam War. The ship was commissioned on October 14, 1995 and currently homeported in San Diego, California. On June 17, 2017 — in one of the most consequential incidents in modern US Navy surface warfare — Fitzgerald collided with the Philippine-flagged container ship MV ACX Crystal in Sagami Nada Bay, 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka, Japan, while transiting south toward the Philippines. The flared bow of the much larger ACX Crystal crushed Fitzgerald's superstructure and her bulbous bow punched through the destroyer's hull, causing catastrophic flooding in berthing spaces. Seven sailors lost their lives in the flooding: Chief Fire Controlman Gary Rehm, Gunner's Mate 1st Class Noe Hernandez, Personnel Specialist 1st Class Xavier A. Martin, Fire Controlman 1st Class Carlos V. Sibayan, Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo A. Douglass, Sonar Technician (Surface) 3rd Class Ngoc T. Truong, and Gunner's Mate Seaman Dakota K. Rigsby. Three additional sailors were injured, including the commanding officer. The ship sustained over $300 million in damage and underwent more than two years of repair (approximately $523 million) at Huntington Ingalls Industries' Pascagoula, Mississippi yard, returning to sea trials in February 2020. Today USS Fitzgerald sails again — every patch a tribute to the fallen seven and the crew who got her home.
