Strike Fighter Squadron 192 — the World Famous Golden Dragons — traces its lineage back to March 26, 1945, when it was established as Fighter Squadron 153 flying the F6F Hellcat at NAS Atlantic City. Through a series of redesignations, the squadron became VF-192 in 1950 and immediately deployed aboard USS Princeton into the Korean War, where its F4U Corsairs flew daring close air support missions and participated in some of the war's most significant joint strikes, including the attack on the Suiho hydroelectric plant on the Yalu River and industrial targets in Pyongyang. In 1953, the squadron transitioned to the F9F Panther and deployed aboard USS Oriskany, where its pilots participated in the filming of The Bridges at Toko-Ri — the Hollywood debut that earned them the legendary nickname 'World Famous Golden Dragons.' The squadron continued its combat legacy through Vietnam, flying the A-4 Skyhawk and A-7 Corsair II, before transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet in 1986 as VFA-192. Forward deployed to Japan aboard USS Midway, the Golden Dragons were at the tip of the spear when Desert Storm kicked off on January 17, 1991, flying 576 combat sorties and dropping over 730,000 pounds of ordnance in 43 days. They went on to support Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom — flying 339 combat missions off USS Kitty Hawk in 2003 alone. Today the Golden Dragons fly the F/A-18E Super Hornet from NAS Lemoore as part of Carrier Air Wing 2, still living up to the name they earned on a film set and proved in every theater of combat since Korea.
