VMF(N)-533 was commissioned on October 1, 1943, at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, under the command of Major Marion M. Magruder, whose call sign gave the squadron its legendary nickname. One of only three night fighter squadrons activated in the Marine Corps during the war, the unit flew the Grumman F6F-5N Hellcat fitted with the APS-6 airborne intercept radar, a cutting-edge system that allowed pilots to hunt enemy aircraft in total darkness. After training at MCAS Ewa, Hawaii, the squadron deployed to Eniwetok Atoll in mid-1944, relieving VMF(N)-532 and assuming night defense responsibilities across the Central Pacific. By the time hostilities ended, VMF(N)-533 had distinguished itself by claiming the most aerial victories of any Marine night fighter squadron and producing the first Marine night fighter ace, Captain Robert Baird, during operations at Yontan Airfield, Okinawa.
