VMFA-224 was commissioned on 1 May 1942 and entered World War II as part of the Cactus Air Force on Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, where the Bengals destroyed over sixty enemy aircraft in fewer than two months under Medal of Honor recipient Major Robert Galer. The squadron carried that combat identity through the Marshall Islands, Okinawa, Vietnam, and into the jet age, flying the Banshee, Panther, Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, and F/A-18D Hornet before beginning its transition to the F-35B Lightning II in 2025. Based at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, South Carolina, under Marine Aircraft Group 31 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, the Fighting Bengals built a reputation for all-weather, multi-role lethality that spans close air support, air interdiction, and aerial reconnaissance. During Operation Desert Storm the Bengals flew 422 combat sorties and expended more than 2.3 million pounds of ordnance in night attack operations, and the squadron has since deployed to Bosnia, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea. The glow feature on this PVC patch reflects the Bengals' long identity as a night-attack unit, giving the insignia a functional nod to the all-weather mission that defined the squadron for decades.
