Officially Licensed USMC/Combat Helicopter & Tiltrotor Association Pop A Smoke Patch - USMC/Combat Helicopter & Tiltrotor Association (Pop A Smoke) officially licensed embroidered patch representing the full lineage of Marine rotary-wing and tiltrotor aviation heritage.
Pop a smoke, mark the zone, and bring the birds in — the signal that help is on the way and no Marine gets left behind.
During the Vietnam War, helicopter crews located their fellow Marines on the ground by asking them to pop a smoke grenade in the landing zone, with the brightly colored smoke identifying the position and giving the pilot wind direction. That tactical call sign became the name and identity of the USMC/Combat Helicopter & Tiltrotor Association, originally founded as the USMC/Vietnam Helicopter Pilot & Aircrew Association by former pilots reconnecting with the men they flew with in combat. The association's mission has never changed: to preserve and promote the camaraderie of Marine Corps pilots, aircrew, and support personnel associated with helicopter and tiltrotor aviation across every era, from the first HRS helicopters in Korea through the CH-46 Sea Knight, CH-53, UH-1, AH-1, and on to the MV-22 Osprey of today. With more than 5,700 members and a biannual reunion tradition, Pop A Smoke keeps the bonds of the Marine helicopter community alive across generations. The association's motto, Often Tested, Always Faithful, Brothers and Sisters Forever, captures the spirit that this officially licensed embroidered patch carries into every collection, shadow box, and display board it joins.
Perfect For: Marine helicopter and tiltrotor veterans, Vietnam-era aircrew and crew chiefs, CH-46 and CH-53 alumni, MV-22 Osprey crews, Pop A Smoke association members, Marine aviation historians, reunion keepsakes, shadow boxes, challenge coin and patch display boards, family tribute pieces, and anyone building a serious Marine Corps aviation heritage collection that spans Korea, Vietnam, and the modern tiltrotor era. It also makes a meaningful gift for supporters and family members who want a respectful, officially licensed piece tied to the full sweep of Marine rotary-wing service.
First in, last out — stitched in thread, carried in memory, worn with pride by the Marine helicopter community.
