United States Marine Corps Aviation is the air arm of the United States Marine Corps, organized as the Aviation Combat Element (ACE) of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force (MAGTF) — the doctrinal Marine Corps formation that integrates ground combat, aviation combat, logistics, and command elements under a single commander to project Marine Corps combat power from amphibious ships, expeditionary airfields, and forward operating bases. Marine Corps Aviation traces its origins to May 22, 1912 when First Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham reported to the Naval Aviation Camp at Annapolis as the first Marine pilot, and has flown in every American conflict since World War I. Today USMC Aviation is organized into three active Marine Aircraft Wings — 1st MAW (Iwakuni / Pacific), 2nd MAW (Cherry Point / Atlantic), 3rd MAW (Miramar / Pacific) — plus the 4th MAW reserve component, and operates an integrated mix of fifth-generation strike fighters (F-35B and F-35C Lightning II), tiltrotors (MV-22B Osprey), light attack helicopters (AH-1Z Viper, UH-1Y Venom), heavy lift (CH-53E Super Stallion / CH-53K King Stallion), aerial refueling and assault transport (KC-130J Super Hercules), unmanned aerial systems (MQ-9A Reaper), and command-and-control / air-control / aviation-logistics units. Whether launching F-35Bs from the deck of an amphibious assault ship or running a forward arming and refueling point (FARP) from a Pacific island chain, the Wing is always the Marines' third dimension.
