The 2nd Marine Regiment traces its lineage to the 1st Advance Base Regiment, activated on 19 June 1913 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and redesignated as the 2nd Marines on 1 January 1933. Assigned to the 2nd Marine Division and headquartered at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, the regiment functions as a maneuver element trained to defeat enemies through integrated fire, close combat, and expeditionary operations across diverse environments. Its combat record spans the Banana Wars, World War II campaigns at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa — where the regiment earned multiple Presidential Unit Citations — and extends through Operation Desert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation Enduring Freedom. In Iraq, the regiment served as Regimental Combat Team 2, conducting counterinsurgency operations across Al Anbar Province, including Operation Steel Curtain in 2005. Today the regiment remains part of II Marine Expeditionary Force, ready to deploy as a task-organized ground combat force wherever the mission demands.
