1st Marine Division PVC Patch
First Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force
The 1st Marine Division—"The Old Breed"—stands as the oldest, largest, and most decorated division in the United States Marine Corps. Activated on 1 February 1941 at Marine Barracks Guantanamo Bay, Cuba from the 1st Marine Brigade, the division has served as the tip of the spear for American expeditionary operations across eight decades of combat. The division's distinctive "Blue Diamond" insignia—a blue diamond with a red numeral "1" and the word "GUADALCANAL" across it—was designed by then-Lieutenant Colonel Merrill B. Twining and commemorates the division's first major campaign.
The 1st Marine Division fought in some of the bloodiest battles of World War II—Guadalcanal, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa—earning its first Presidential Unit Citation at Guadalcanal in 1942. In the Korean War, the division conducted the amphibious landing at Inchon and fought the legendary Battle of the Chosin Reservoir in November–December 1950, where outnumbered Marines fought through overwhelming Chinese forces in brutal cold to reach the sea. From 1966 to 1971, the division served in Vietnam, participating in operations from Chu Lai to Da Nang to Hue City during the Tet Offensive.
In January 1991, the 1st Marine Division breached Iraqi minefields during Operation Desert Storm. In 2003, the division spearheaded the invasion of Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom, fighting from the Kuwaiti border to Baghdad. The division deployed repeatedly to Iraq's Al Anbar Province and to Afghanistan's Helmand Province through 2014. Today, headquartered at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, the 1st Marine Division comprises the 1st, 5th, and 7th Marine Regiments, the 11th Marine Regiment (artillery), and supporting units under I Marine Expeditionary Force.
Perfect For: 1st Marine Division Marines and veterans, "Old Breed" community members, Camp Pendleton Marines, I MEF personnel, and anyone who proudly serves or has served under the Blue Diamond.
The Old Breed—first to fight from Guadalcanal to Baghdad, carrying forward a legacy of valor written in the blood of America's finest since 1941.
