USS Emory S. Land (AS-39) is the lead ship of the Emory S. Land class of submarine tenders and one of only two remaining commissioned submarine tenders in the US Navy. Her keel was laid down on March 2, 1976, she was launched on May 4, 1977, and was commissioned on July 7, 1979 as the first of the Navy's then-newest class of submarine tenders, designed specifically to support Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines and named for Vice Admiral Emory S. Land, World War II maritime administrator. Across more than four decades of service Emory S. Land has been homeported in four locations: Norfolk, Virginia (1979–1999), La Maddalena, Italy (1999–2006), Bremerton, Washington (2006–2007), and currently Apra Harbor, Guam (2007–present), supporting submarine forces under Commander, Submarine Force, US Pacific Fleet (SUBPAC). The ship's notable operational record includes: September 1980 deployment to provide services to the Indian Ocean Battle Group, July 1986 service as command ship during the International Naval Review in New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty Rededication, 1988 182-day around-the-world deployment with port visits in Lisbon, Naples, Port Said, Muscat, Fremantle, and Rodman, April 1999 transfer to the Mediterranean to relieve USS Simon Lake (AS-33) as the Navy's forward-deployed tender, ship-repair support for Operation Enduring Freedom (2001–2003) and a three-month Operation Iraqi Freedom deployment, and most recently an 11-month, 17-port expeditionary deployment from May 2024 to April 2025 supporting US 7th Fleet across the Indo-Pacific.
