USS Albuquerque (SSN-706) was commissioned on 21 May 1983 as a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast-attack submarine built by the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics in Groton, Connecticut. Her hull number, SSN-706, was chosen as a deliberate nod to the 1706 founding of the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, giving the boat a civic identity as distinctive as her combat record. Over more than three decades of active service she steamed well over half a million miles, completed more than a thousand dives, and carried out over fifteen overseas deployments spanning the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, and West Pacific. She earned the informal title Sure Shooter of the Submarine Force after achieving the best Tomahawk hit rate of any boat during strikes on Serb-controlled Yugoslavia in May 1999. By the time she was decommissioned on 27 February 2017 at Keyport Undersea Museum, she had accumulated three Navy Unit Commendations, four Meritorious Unit Commendations, and four Battle Efficiency E Awards — a service record that few submarines in her class could match.
