USS Albuquerque (SSN-706) was commissioned on 21 May 1983 at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut, as the nineteenth boat in the Los Angeles class. She carried the motto Silentum Excubitor, Latin for Silent Sentinel, and lived up to it across more than fifteen overseas deployments spanning the North Atlantic, Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, and western Pacific. During the 1999 NATO air campaign against Serbia, Albuquerque fired ten Tomahawk cruise missiles against strategic targets in Yugoslavia, achieving a perfect hit rate and earning the Combat Action Ribbon, one of the rarest distinctions in the submarine force and the origin of her enduring nickname. Over a career that stretched more than thirty-three years, she steamed over half a million miles, made more than one thousand dives, and made port calls in nearly twenty countries under thirteen commanding officers. She was awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations and completed the fastest and most cost-effective Engineered Refueling Overhaul in Navy history before her final deployments from San Diego. Decommissioned on 27 February 2017, her record stands as one of the most decorated in Los Angeles-class history.
