United States Navy
The United States Navy was established on 13 October 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the outfitting of two armed vessels to intercept British supply ships during the American Revolution. The Department of the Navy was formally created on 30 April 1798, and in the centuries since, the Navy has grown into the world's most powerful maritime force, projecting American sea power across every ocean and theater of operations.
The Navy's combat legacy spans the full breadth of American military history, from the Barbary Wars of 1801–1805 through the decisive naval engagements of World War II, including the Battle of Midway on 4–7 June 1942, where four Japanese carriers were sunk in a turning point of the Pacific War. During the Korean War, Navy aircraft flew over 275,000 combat sorties, and in Vietnam, Operation Rolling Thunder saw Navy carrier air wings conduct sustained bombing campaigns from 1965 to 1968. In Operation Desert Storm, Navy vessels launched 288 Tomahawk cruise missiles during the opening hours of the campaign on 17 January 1991 — the first combat use of the weapon system.
Today, the United States Navy operates over 290 deployable ships, including 11 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and 72 submarines, with approximately 346,000 active-duty personnel serving around the globe. Its motto, "Non Sibi Sed Patriae" — Not for Self, but for Country — embodies a tradition of service spanning 250 years of naval excellence and global maritime dominance.
Perfect For: Navy active-duty Sailors, Navy veterans, naval aviation enthusiasts, fleet personnel, Navy reservists, and supporters of American sea power.
A tribute to the men and women of the United States Navy — 250 years of defending freedom on the world's oceans.
