Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron Light 35 (HSL-35), the "Magicians," was a US Navy helicopter squadron based at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego, California. The squadron was originally commissioned as HSL-35 on April 1, 1983 at NAS North Island flying the Kaman SH-2F Sea Sprite under the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System (LAMPS) Mark I construct, supporting deployable single-aircraft detachments aboard West Coast frigates, destroyers, and cruisers in the Pacific Fleet. As a LAMPS Mk I squadron, HSL-35 Magicians' SH-2Fs delivered the Navy's first integrated ship-helicopter anti-submarine warfare and over-the-horizon targeting capability, deploying continuously across the 1980s and 1990s in support of Pacific Fleet operations and Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm in 1990–91. The squadron was disestablished on October 30, 1993 with the retirement of the SH-2F community in favor of the SH-60B Seahawk LAMPS Mk III, with personnel and many aircraft transferring to the East Coast HSL-37 and other LAMPS Mk III squadrons. The Magicians callsign and emblem were later carried forward by HSM-35 — Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron 35 — when that squadron was commissioned on October 1, 2009 at NAS North Island as the Navy's first MH-60R expeditionary squadron, formally inheriting the Magicians lineage. This throwback patch and matching name tags celebrate the original HSL-35 SH-2F Magicians and the LAMPS Mk I era.
