Officially Licensed MAG-16 Med Evac Patch — Embroidered Patch
The Group That Wrote the Playbook
MAG-16 didn't just support medevac operations in Vietnam — it built the framework for how Marine helicopter medevac would work for decades to come. This patch honors the Marines of Marine Aircraft Group 16 and the medevac crews who operated under its command, flying some of the most dangerous missions of the war from Da Nang and Marble Mountain.
Marine Aircraft Group 16 was at the center of Marine helicopter operations in Vietnam from the very beginning. It was MAG-16 that provided the squadrons for Operation Shufly, the rotating deployment of Marine helicopter units that began in April 1962. When the full Marine commitment arrived in 1965, MAG-16 deployed to Da Nang Air Base and became the hub for medium and heavy helicopter operations across I Corps. The group's squadrons flew assault transport, resupply, and medevac missions daily, operating CH-46 Sea Knights, UH-34 Seahorses, and CH-53 Sea Stallions from bases that were frequently under rocket and mortar attack. MAG-16's medevac crews developed the procedures and techniques that became standard across Marine aviation, saving countless lives in the process.
