VT-28 was commissioned on May 1, 1960, evolving from Advanced Training Unit 611 into one of the Navy's most storied primary training squadrons under Training Wing Four at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. Over its long history the Rangers flew the Grumman S-2 Tracker, the T-44A King Air, and the T-34C Turbo Mentor before transitioning to the T-6B Texan II, logging more than 525,000 flight hours and producing thousands of designated naval aviators across every community. Today the squadron puts student naval aviators through demanding instructional phases covering takeoff and landing, emergency procedures, aerobatics, formation, and instrument flying. Instructors come from every Navy and Marine fixed-wing and helicopter community, giving the Rangers ready room a depth of operational experience that shapes the next generation of fleet aviators. The knowledge and discipline built inside VT-28 follow graduates into every advanced pipeline, from rotary-wing and maritime patrol to carrier aviation, which is exactly why the squadron carries the motto The Foundation Builders with quiet pride.
