Somewhere overhead, an Ironman crew is airborne right now. That's not a figure of speech.

VQ-3 "Ironmen" is a Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron flying the Boeing E-6B Mercury out of Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, under Strategic Communications Wing ONE. The Ironmen's mission is TACAMO — "Take Charge and Move Out" — providing survivable airborne communications links between the National Command Authority and the nation's strategic nuclear forces, including ballistic missile submarines, B-2 bombers, and ICBM silos. Established in 1968, VQ-3 transitioned from the EC-130Q to the E-6A Mercury in 1989, and later to the E-6B, which also assumed the Looking Glass airborne command post mission formerly held by the Air Force. This patch represents one of the most critical and least-known missions in the entire military — the crews who ensure that if the worst day ever comes, the President can still communicate with the arsenal of democracy.
