Patrol Squadron 9's Iceland detachment represents the Golden Eagles' operations from Naval Air Station Keflavik, a critical Cold War and post-Cold War base for monitoring Soviet and Russian submarine activity in the GIUK (Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom) gap. VP-9's maritime patrol aircraft tracked submarine movements through one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the North Atlantic, providing the intelligence that kept NATO's northern flank secure. This DET patch commemorates the Eagles' time hunting submarines in some of the most inhospitable flying conditions on Earth.
