VP-46 holds a distinction few Navy squadrons can claim: it is the oldest maritime patrol squadron and the second oldest aircraft squadron in the entire U.S. Navy, tracing its lineage to the establishment of VP-5S on July 1, 1931. Based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington, and operating under Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing Ten, the Grey Knights have flown maritime patrol and reconnaissance missions across every major conflict from World War II through Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, and beyond, including sustained ISR operations during Enduring Freedom and Inherent Resolve. The squadron transitioned to the P-8A Poseidon, bringing its long history of overwater patrol into the jet age without losing the Grey Knights identity that defines the community.
