Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 363 (VMM-363), the "Lucky Red Lions," is a USMC MV-22B Osprey tiltrotor squadron based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCB Hawaii) in Kaneohe Bay, under Marine Aircraft Group 24 (MAG-24) and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron was originally activated on June 2, 1952 at MCAS Santa Ana, California as Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 363 (HMR-363) in response to Korean War demand for vertical envelopment capability, and in 1953 — operating the Sikorsky HRS-1 — participated in Operation Desert Rock at the Nevada Test Site, the first US atomic test to use ground troops in a tactical exercise. The squadron deployed to Vietnam in August 1965, arriving at Qui Nhon on September 1, 1965, and conducted its initial combat mission moving the 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines into a landing zone south of Da Nang — going on to develop close combat ties with Republic of Korea forces during Operation Flying Tiger. March 26, 1968 marked a tragic day in squadron history when a medevac aircraft crashed, killing seven including the commanding officer. Across the squadron's history the Red Lions have flown the HRS-1, H-34, CH-46 Sea Knight, and CH-53 Sea Stallion before redesignation as VMM-363 in 2012 and transition to the MV-22B Osprey. Post-Vietnam combat and humanitarian operations have included Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Restore Hope (Somalia 1992), and Philippines humanitarian relief (1990).
