VMM-265 traces its lineage to 1 October 1962, when the squadron was first activated at Marine Corps Air Facility New River, North Carolina. After decades of service spanning Vietnam, Desert Storm, and humanitarian relief operations across the Pacific, the Dragons transitioned to the MV-22B Osprey and were redesignated VMM-265 on 7 September 2012. The squadron holds a unique distinction as the first MV-22 Osprey unit stationed abroad, operating from MCAS Futenma under Marine Aircraft Group 36 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. Today the Dragons serve as a core aviation asset for the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, the only continually forward-deployed MEU outside the United States, conducting assault support transport of combat troops, supplies, and equipment across the Indo-Pacific on short notice. From earthquake relief in Kumamoto to multinational exercises throughout Southeast Asia, the Dragons carry the mission wherever the region demands it.
