Marine Medium Tiltrotor Squadron 264 traces its lineage to 30 June 1959, when it was commissioned as Marine Helicopter Transportation Squadron Light 264 at MCAS New River, North Carolina. Over more than six decades the Black Knights flew CH-46 Sea Knights through humanitarian relief, combat deployments in Iraq including Operation Matador, and multiple Marine Expeditionary Unit rotations before becoming the last east coast squadron to transition to the MV-22B Osprey in 2009. Operating under Marine Aircraft Group 26 and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, VMM-264 built a reputation for assault support, aerial delivery, and tactical recovery of aircraft and personnel launched from the decks of amphibious assault ships. The squadron was deactivated in June 2020 under Force Design initiatives and reactivated in December 2025 to meet a growing II Marine Expeditionary Force requirement for an additional east coast tiltrotor squadron. The Checkmate patch name draws directly from the chess identity at the heart of the Black Knights callsign, where the knight piece delivers the decisive move — a fitting emblem for a squadron that has repeatedly answered the call when the mission demanded speed, range, and precision that legacy rotary-wing platforms could not match.
