VMM-262 traces its lineage to September 1, 1951, when it was activated at MCAS Cherry Point, North Carolina, as Marine Helicopter Transport Squadron 262. Over seven decades the squadron flew combat operations in Vietnam, supported Operation Frequent Wind during the evacuation of Saigon in 1975, and transitioned from the CH-46E Sea Knight to the MV-22B Osprey, earning redesignation as VMM-262. Based at MCAS Futenma under Marine Aircraft Group 36 and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, the Flying Tigers are continuously forward-deployed in the Indo-Pacific, providing assault support transport of troops, supplies, and equipment for expeditionary and combined operations. The squadron's Ospreys self-deployed to Kathmandu in 2015 to deliver food and shelter materials across the Himalayas during Nepal earthquake relief, demonstrating the reach and responsiveness that define the tiltrotor mission. The Fat Osprey nickname captures the MV-22B's wide-body silhouette and heavy-lift character, and it is worn as a badge of pride by aircrew and maintainers who know exactly what that aircraft can carry and how far it can go.
