Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 533 (VMFA-533), the Hawks, operates the F-35B Lightning II out of MCAS Beaufort, South Carolina, as part of Marine Aircraft Group 31 (MAG-31) under the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing. Cold Response is a major NATO exercise conducted in Norway, designed to test allied forces' ability to operate in extreme Arctic conditions. VMFA-533's participation in Cold Response 2026 demonstrates the Marine Corps' commitment to operating the F-35B in the harshest environments on earth — proving that fifth-generation stealth strike capability can be projected from austere, frozen airfields at the top of the world. This shoulder patch marks the Hawks' contribution to one of NATO's most demanding training exercises.
