Official VMFA-122 Crusaders "When You're out of Crusaders, You're out of Fighters" Shoulder Patch — Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 F-35B Lightning II Embroidered Patch
When you're out of Crusaders, you're out of fighters — VMFA-122 carries the name from the Wildcat to the F-35B.
Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 122 (VMFA-122), the "Crusaders," is a USMC F-35B Lightning II strike fighter squadron based at MCAS Yuma, Arizona, under MAG-13 and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. The squadron was originally commissioned as VMF-122 on March 1, 1942 at Camp Kearny, San Diego, and earned its name in the Cactus Air Force at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal — including a 1943 tour under the command of Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington that produced 35½ aerial kills. Originally nicknamed the "Candystripers," the squadron adopted the "Crusaders" callsign in December 1957 with delivery of the F-8U-1 and in September 1959 became the first Marine F-8 squadron to qualify aboard an aircraft carrier, USS Independence (CV-62). The Crusaders subsequently flew the F-4 Phantom II and the F/A-18A and F/A-18C Hornet from MCAS Beaufort, deploying for combat from Operation Desert Storm through Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom. On November 14, 2017 VMFA-122 transitioned from the F/A-18C to the F-35B Lightning II and relocated from MCAS Beaufort and 2nd MAW to MCAS Yuma and 3rd MAW. This shoulder patch carries the squadron's iconic Crusader-era line — a tribute to the lineage that connects Boyington's Corsairs at Guadalcanal to today's STOVL stealth strike fighters at Yuma.
Perfect For: VMFA-122 Crusaders active-duty and veteran personnel, F-35B Lightning II pilots and maintainers, MCAS Yuma Marines, MAG-13 and 3rd MAW personnel, F-8 Crusader and F/A-18 Hornet heritage enthusiasts, MCAS Beaufort alumni, and Marine fighter community patch collectors.
Crusaders — out of Crusaders, out of fighters, since 1942.
