VFC-13 was formally established on September 1, 1973, at NAS New Orleans and has grown into the Navy Reserve's premier adversary squadron, permanently based at NAS Fallon since 1996 when it absorbed the adversary mission from the disestablished VFA-127. Flying under the callsign Bogey, the Fighting Saints provide dissimilar air combat training to Navy and Marine Corps fleet and replacement squadrons, carrier air wings, USAF units, Air National Guard, and Canadian Forces. In December 2022, the squadron completed its transition from the long-serving F-5N Tiger II to the F-16C Block 32 Fighting Falcon, retired from U.S. Air Force and Air National Guard service and repainted in the exotic threat schemes that define the adversary mission. Operating twelve Vipers at the Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center alongside TOPGUN, the Fighting Saints now bring fourth-generation performance to every DACT engagement, giving fleet crews the most realistic red air environment the Navy can produce. The squadron has earned two consecutive CNO Safety Awards, the Golden Wrench Maintenance Award, and two Battle E efficiency awards, a record that reflects the professionalism behind every sortie. This shoulder patch captures that identity — the Saints name, the Viper airframe, and the adversary mission — in embroidered form built for display, flight gear, and unit collections.
