VFA-34 traces its lineage to Fighter Squadron VF-20, established in October 1943, and has carried the Blue Blasters nickname since 1957, when the squadron drew its identity from its blue tail markings and nuclear strike mission. Reestablished in 1970 as an A-6 Intruder unit, the squadron distinguished itself in Operations Prairie Fire and El Dorado Canyon and was the first to employ the Harpoon missile in combat. After transitioning to the F/A-18C Hornet in 1996 and becoming VFA-34, the Blue Blasters supported Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve across multiple carrier deployments. In 2018, the squadron made history as the last Navy unit to deploy operationally with the legacy F/A-18C Hornet before transitioning to the F/A-18E Super Hornet. Today, VFA-34 operates from Naval Air Station Oceana as part of Carrier Air Wing Three, attached to USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, with the motto Have gun, Will travel defining its ready-strike identity.
