VFA-25 traces its lineage to Torpedo Squadron 17, commissioned on 1 January 1943 at NAS Norfolk flying the Grumman TBF Avenger. The squadron fought through World War II, Korea, and Vietnam before transitioning to the F/A-18 Hornet and earning the re-designation Strike Fighter Squadron 25 on 1 July 1983. In February 1985, VFA-25 made history as the first squadron to deploy the F/A-18 Hornet aboard a carrier, embarking on USS Constellation with Carrier Air Wing 14. The Fist went on to fly combat missions in Operation Desert Shield, Operation Southern Watch, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, where it delivered more than 300,000 pounds of ordnance and led the opening Shock and Awe strikes on Baghdad. Today the squadron flies the Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet, known throughout the fleet as the Rhino, a name drawn from the distinctive protrusion on the aircraft's radome. The squadron's iconic insignia, a black fist clenching a red lightning bolt on a field of yellow, has represented the Fist of the Fleet since 1949 and anchors the design of this embroidered patch with unmistakable carrier aviation identity.
