VFA-154 traces its roots to Naval Reserve squadron VFB-718, activated on July 1, 1946, flying the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair before cycling through the designations VF-68A and VF-837. When the unit flew F9F-2 Panthers in combat off USS Antietam during the Korean War, it earned a reputation for precision strike work that led directly to its redesignation as VF-154 on February 4, 1953, while passing under the Golden Gate Bridge aboard USS Princeton. The Grand Slammers nickname followed, adopted in recognition of the squadron's bombing proficiency, and the insignia settled on a flaming black panther on a yellow background that defined the unit's visual identity through the mid-1950s. That original panther emblem, famously refined with input from cartoonist Milton Caniff, creator of Terry and the Pirates, gave the squadron a look as sharp as its combat record.
