Once a Knight, always a Knight — the Black Knights carry eight decades of naval aviation identity, combat history, and carrier strike excellence into every deployment.
VFA-154 traces its lineage to Naval Reserve squadron VFB-718, established on July 1, 1946, at Naval Air Station Floyd Bennett, New York, flying the F6F Hellcat and F4U Corsair. The squadron flew combat missions during the Korean War from USS Antietam and later transitioned through the F-8 Crusader, F-4 Phantom II, and the legendary F-14 Tomcat before redesignating as VFA-154 in October 2003 at NAS Lemoore, California. The Black Knights became the Navy's first forward-deployed F-14 squadron at NAF Atsugi, Japan, and the first to carry an air-to-ground bombing capability in that role. Today the squadron flies the F/A-18F Super Hornet as part of Carrier Air Wing Eleven aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt. The iconic Black Knight insignia — a silver armored knight on a black field — was originally drawn by celebrated cartoonist Milton Caniff and has anchored the squadron's identity since the Crusader era. The motto BKR, meaning Black Knights Rule, and the callsign Knight reinforce a unit culture built on precision, readiness, and carrier strike pride. The phrase Once a Knight captures the lifelong bond shared by everyone who has worn the squadron's patch.
