Knights of the Lemoore flight line — the Knighthawks have flown the Hornet since the type went to sea.
Strike Fighter Squadron 136 (VFA-136), the "Knighthawks," is a US Navy strike fighter squadron based at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, currently flying the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The squadron was commissioned as VFA-136 on July 1, 1985 at NAS Lemoore as one of the original West Coast F/A-18A Hornet fleet replacement squadrons, and made its first combat deployment in 1989 aboard USS America (CV-66) with Carrier Air Wing ONE (CVW-1) — including combat operations during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 supporting the air campaign over Iraq from the Red Sea. The Knighthawks subsequently transitioned through the F/A-18C Hornet and deployed continuously across the post-Cold War, Bosnia, and Iraq War eras with carrier air wings including CVW-1, CVW-3, CVW-7, and CVW-2 aboard USS Enterprise (CVN-65), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), and USS George H.W. Bush (CVN-77), supporting Operations Deny Flight, Allied Force, Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, and Inherent Resolve. In 2018 VFA-136 transitioned from the F/A-18C to the F/A-18E Super Hornet, fully integrating into the Block III–capable Super Hornet fleet, and continues to deploy as part of the West Coast Lemoore Super Hornet community. The squadron's distinctive black knight helmet emblem on a white-and-red tail flash carries forward the original 1985 squadron design.
