Officially Licensed US Navy HS-5 Night Dippers Patch — Hunting Submarines After Dark
The Night Dippers of HS-5 did their best work after sundown — dipping sonar into black water and pulling out contacts.
Helicopter Anti-Submarine Squadron 5 (HS-5), the Night Dippers, was a U.S. Navy helicopter squadron that operated the H-3 Sea King in the anti-submarine warfare and combat search and rescue roles. The Night Dippers earned their name from the demanding practice of conducting dipping sonar operations at night — hovering a helicopter over the open ocean in darkness while lowering sonar equipment into the water to detect submarines. It was some of the most challenging flying in naval aviation, requiring exceptional crew coordination, aircraft handling, and tactical discipline. HS-5 deployed with Atlantic Fleet carrier air wings for decades.
Perfect For: HS-5 Night Dippers veterans, H-3 Sea King ASW crews, night operations helicopter aviators, dipping sonar operators, and Navy helicopter heritage patch collectors.
