Official US Army The Original Dust Off 57th Med Det Hel Amb Sticker - US Army 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance), the original Dust Off unit, commemorated in a durable vinyl sticker.
When the call came in, they flew anyway — unarmed, into the fire, because that was the mission and that was the standard every Dust Off crew that followed would inherit.
In April 1962, the 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) arrived in South Vietnam with five UH-1 Huey helicopters, becoming the first Army unit to deploy the aircraft in combat and the first dedicated helicopter ambulance unit in the Vietnam theater. On 12 May 1962, the detachment flew its first MEDEVAC mission, establishing a standard of care under fire that would define aeromedical evacuation for generations. In 1963, Major Lloyd E. Spencer selected the call sign Dustoff from the Navy Support Activity's call sign book, and the name never left. It became the permanent radio identity for every Army helicopter ambulance that followed, earning the 57th its motto, The Original Dust Off. The unit served in Vietnam for eleven years, growing from a single detachment to a network that eventually gave every corps in the country helicopter MEDEVAC coverage. That sustained presence contributed to the lowest battlefield mortality rate in US military history to that point. Over the course of the war, the detachment evacuated more than 100,000 patients from the combat zone and was recognized with a Presidential Unit Citation, six Meritorious Unit Commendations, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Device. The vinyl sticker format gives that legacy a clean, lasting surface for helmets, gear cases, shadow box frames, vehicle windows, and veteran displays.
Perfect For: US Army veterans, Vietnam War historians, MEDEVAC crew alumni, aeromedical evacuation supporters, military sticker collectors, shadow box builders, reunion organizers, flight medic communities, Army aviation enthusiasts, and anyone who wants to carry a piece of the Dust Off story on their gear or display.
The Original Dust Off — a call sign earned in 1962 and never given back.
