Marine Wing Support Squadron 473 is a reserve aviation ground support unit headquartered at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California, with detachments at Naval Air Station Lemoore and Naval Air Station Fort Worth. The squadron operates under Marine Aircraft Group 41 and the 4th Marine Aircraft Wing, tasked with providing all essential aviation ground support to fixed-wing and rotor-wing components of an Aviation Combat Element. That mission covers fueling, loading, airfield operations, heavy equipment, and combat service support wherever the wing deploys. MWSS-473 answered that call during Desert Shield, backfilling active-duty Marines at MCAS El Toro, and again during an eight-month deployment to Afghanistan in 2004 and 2005, where the unit fueled and loaded helicopters at multiple bases across the eastern part of the country and supported humanitarian aid missions throughout the region. Detachment B Marines from Fort Worth made history as the first Marine Corps unit to train at the Fort Hood Air Assault School, and the squadron continues to certify through integrated training exercises at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms.
